That’s what I call multifaceted emotions—layers of feelings that overlap, tangle, and sometimes contradict each other. It can feel confusing, like you’re riding three emotional waves at once without knowing which one to surf first.

The truth is, emotions aren’t designed to show up in neat, single boxes. They’re like light shining through a prism—splitting into different colors all at once. And while that might feel chaotic in the moment, it’s also an opportunity. It means your body, mind, and spirit are all trying to communicate with you.

The challenge isn’t having these layered emotions—it’s learning how to work with them, so they guide you instead of overwhelm you. And that’s where energy healing comes in.

Why Do Emotions Get So Complicated?

Multifaceted emotions usually have three common roots:

Past experiences resurfacing

Old wounds, even ones you thought you’d “moved past,” can reappear when something current brushes against them. That’s why a simple disagreement at work might stir up an old childhood memory of not being heard.

Conflicting desires

You want peace, but you also want answers. You want closeness, but you also crave space. When your heart and mind pull in different directions, emotions stack on top of each other until you can’t tell where one ends and the other begins.

Energetic imbalances

When your energy system gets stuck in survival mode—fight, flight, freeze, or fawn—it scrambles emotional clarity. Your body might be holding on to anxiety in your chest, anger in your jaw, and sadness in your gut, all at once.

 

Think of it like an orchestra where every instrument is playing at the same time, but without harmony. It sounds chaotic. But when brought back into alignment, those same instruments create music.

The 3-Step Framework for Healing Multifaceted Emotions

When emotions feel tangled, here’s a simple framework I use with clients (and one you can begin practicing yourself): 

Step 1: Notice

Pause and name the strongest emotion showing up. Anger? Fear? Sadness? Don’t try to change it yet—just acknowledge it.

👉 Ask yourself: “What am I feeling right now, and where do I feel it in my body?”

 

Step 2: Release

Breathe into that feeling. Inhale for 4 counts, exhale for 4 counts. Repeat 4 times. Imagine the emotion softening, loosening its grip, or flowing out of your body with each exhale.

👉 Try this mantra as you breathe: “I let this energy move through me.”

 

Step 3: Integrate

Once the intensity lessens, listen for what’s underneath. Often, anger hides sadness, or fear hides a longing for safety. Write down what comes forward, and ask yourself: “What do I need right now to feel supported?”

👉 This is where new insights rise—what once felt like a flood of confusion begins to organize itself into clear guidance.

 

A Story of Emotional Untangling

One client (shared with permission, name changed) came to me feeling “all over the place.” She described herself as anxious, irritable, and sad all at once. During her session, we worked with breath and energy clearing around her heart and solar plexus.

At first, her anger was loudest. But as we softened that energy, sadness surfaced—she realized she was grieving a friendship that had quietly ended months ago. Beneath that, what she truly wanted was connection and belonging.

After the session, she said: “I thought I needed to control my anger. What I really needed was to honor my grief.”

Place one hand on the center of your chest and one on your lower belly.

Inhale through your nose for 4 counts, exhale through your mouth for 4 counts. Repeat 4 times.

Say silently: “I am safe to feel. I am safe to release. I am safe to receive
